The estate
Built in the 1500s,
and never modernised
The Château de Motteux is protected. The French state lists it as a monument historique, the national protection that governs what may be altered or built here. The mullioned windows are original. So are the turrets, the slate pepperpot roofs and the rusticated stone of the walls.
The house sits in 23 hectares (57 acres) of walled woodland. You hire the whole estate for a weekend or for a single day – house, outbuildings, lawns and woods. Nobody else is booked in alongside you.

The building
Four things everyone photographs
The wrought-iron gates
Iron scrollwork, and behind it the whole front of the house. This is the first thing your guests see.
The horseshoe staircase
Two flights of steps curve down to the lawn on the garden side. It’s the shape everyone remembers the house by.
The drawing rooms
Chevron parquet underfoot, marble fireplaces, overmantel mirrors, old panelling on the walls. Nothing has been stripped out or replaced.
The stables and outbuildings
The ceremony barn is one of them. Stone and brick, arched doorways, a terrace along the front, and the main courtyard on the other side.
The grounds

A wall runs the whole way round, and inside it are lawns, bridle paths and woodland. Ceremonies happen out here. So do the photographs, the drinks at sunset and the team games. Four seasons, four different lights on the stone.

The lodges are built of wood throughout, and they stand in the grounds a short walk from the house. A dormitory and extra tents can go up when there are more of you. Brunch is in the house the next morning.
